The Dementia Training and Education Strategy for Gloucestershire

A strategy designed to help the local health and social care workforce meet local needs and the national strategy

student

We have developed a dementia training and education strategy for the health and social care workforce in Gloucestershire. One of our key aims is to empower partners to work together to achieve a multi agency / multi professional approach to meeting local needs and national strategy.

A county wide group oversees the development and implementation of the strategy, with a clear focus on the establishment of a shared dementia training and learning pathway. We are also working closely with our local Mental health Trust to support the development of a carers education programme for primary care, which builds on their widely respected existing model.

In 2008, we commissioned the development of a dementia e-learning programme from Kwango. This programme complements other dementia learning resources, including SCIE's e-learning, and is an integral part of our blended learning approach to fulfil the need for a sustainable learning resource at awareness level. We launched this new programme at an event in May 08 and it is currently receiving excellent feedback from a wide range of staff, carers and volunteers. Other Authorities can now purchase the programme from Kwango; please go to the Kwango.com website  for further information.

Our highly successful 3 file dementia training resources for care homes which we developed in 2008, have now been produced in an interactive format and can be viewed on the following page: The Dementia Training Pathway for Care Homes

Following on from this we have also produced updated dementia training resource files for staff in Community Steps, Intermediate Care and the Domiciliary Contracted Provider workforce. These training files are being fully utilised to complement the dementia training pathway for these groups.

The Dementia Training Strategy Launch event for Managers, took place on 22nd October 2009. Evaluations noted the event as excellent with many managers reporting that they had been inspired and motivated to raise the quality of dementia care. The speaker profiles and PDF presentations for this event can be downloaded below.
