Carers Emergency Scheme

Purple Square Block

National research has shown that a major concern that limits carers' activities and causes them much anxiety is what would happen to the person they care for if the carer becomes ill or is involved in an accident.

To address this issue, the government has given local authorities money to provide carers with peace of mind by ensuring that alternative short-term, home-based care can be put in place in the event of an emergency.

Gloucestershire Carers Emergency Scheme has been developed, in consultation with carers and staff, to respond promptly to carers in an emergency by providing substitute care to the people they look after.

The scheme operates at 2 levels:

Level 1: The carer contacts Carers Gloucestershire on 01452 386283, nominates 2 contacts (e.g. family members, friends or neighbours) who are willing to be called upon in an emergency, and completes an enrolment form. The details are passed to Worcestershire Telecare and the carer is issued with the Carers Emergency Card, which contains the Telecare number and a unique ID number.

In an emergency, the Telecare number is called and the Telecare staff contact the nominated people.

Any carer can sign up to this level and no assessment is needed.

Level 2-: Carers looking after someone with high care needs have the additional option of having a support worker supplied in an emergency by the County Council to take over their caring role for up to 48 hours (72 over a weekend or bank holiday). This provision allows a breathing space either for the emergency to be resolved, or, if the carer is not going to be able to resume the caring responsibilities by the end of the 48 (or 72) hour period, for longer term arrangements to be made.

The Carers Emergency Scheme is provided free of charge.

The aim of the scheme is to offer carers peace of mind that if anything happens to them or they are called away suddenly to an emergency elsewhere, the person they care for will not be left without help and support.
