The recently appointed Fire Service Minister Nick Hurd MP visited the Waterwells HQ of Gloucestershire Constabulary and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) as part of his new duties.

During the visit the minister stopped into Gloucester South Community Fire Station in Tuffley to meet crew members and partners that work from the station.

A tour of the county’s SkillZONE centre, based at Gloucester South, was also on the agenda, and the minister heard about the engagement and education work done by the centre with schools and young people in Gloucestershire.

Stewart Edgar, chief fire officer at Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “It is a real honour to be able to welcome the minister to Gloucester to see the work we’ve been doing across the county.

“We’re one of the most efficient fire service in the country, which I am incredibly proud of. Our staff work tirelessly to improve the way we operate and we’re really seeing the impact of that.”

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service do an incredible job keeping us all safe.

“I’m pleased we’ve had this opportunity to show the minister what brilliant work is happening in Gloucestershire and what an efficient and effective job our fire service does day in day out.”

The minster was joined by leader of Gloucestershire County Council, Mark Hawthorne, chief executive of Gloucestershire County Council, Peter Bungard and chairman of the Local Government Association’s Fire Services Management Committee Jeremy Hilton.
