Last chance to switch and save money on your bills

Households have until 16th May to register with this round of the Big Community Switch scheme, supported by Gloucestershire County Council.

The Big Community Switch can help you to save money on your gas and electricity bills by bulk buying fuel. The scheme can also help households with pre-payment meters, making it easier to get a competitive price and save money on gas and electricity.

Pre-payment metres are installed in households so that people can keep a closer eye of how much they spend on bills, using a top up card to pay for fuel. However, those using pre-payment meters are often paying above average tariffs and are more at risk of fuel poverty.

In March this year, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed a price cap for all households using pre-payment meters following an 18-month investigation into the energy market. The CMA found that pre-payment customers are paying more than those on standard variable tariffs.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council said, "Now in its fourth year the Big Community Switch scheme is still helping people to save money on their energy bills. It's helping households with pre-payment meters save money too so remember to apply by Monday 16th May to see what savings you can make."

The Big Community Switch works by bulk buying fuel. If a large number of people want to change supplier together they are likely to get a better deal than just one person shopping around and switching on their own.

In October last year, we saw the highest number of households to-date take part in the scheme, resulting in an average household saving of £224.

You can register online at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bigcommunityswitch. If you do not have access to the internet you can call the council 01452 425757 between 8.30am and 5pm from Monday to Friday. You can also find out more information at your local library.

By registering your interest you are under no obligation to switch supplier. Residents need to register their interest with the Big Community Switch by Monday 16th May at the latest.
