Racecourse roundabout set for new road surface

Gloucestershire County Council will be resurfacing the roundabout outside Cheltenham racecourse this weekend with a diversion in place for traffic.

The improvement work will see 300 tonnes of new material put down on the roundabout to create a smoother and safer road surface for the many hundreds of vehicles which use it each day.

To minimise disruption the work will take place over the weekend.

The roundabout will be closed to traffic from 7am this Saturday 21st May and will reopen at 6am on Monday 23rd May.

Advance warning signs are already in place for motorists in the area.

During the work signed diversions will be in place.

Access will be maintained for pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said, "We're laying a brand new surface on this popular Cheltenham roundabout. These are priority improvements which will be carried out over the weekend to minimise disruption. I'd like to thank local people and visitors for their patience while we get the work done."

Special arrangements have been made for Stagecoach buses, allowing them to pass through the racecourse grounds.

The county council's highway crews work around the clock every day of the year to keep Gloucestershire safe and moving. Anyone on Twitter can follow @GlosRoads to find out what is being worked on at the moment and look out for the hashtag #highways365 for the latest updates.
