Roadworks Information and Planned Road Closures

Latest Update

From 2 June to early October 2026, Alvin Street will operate as a temporary one-way system to enable works at the road entrance. The permitted direction of travel will be from London Road towards Kingsholm Road only, with no entry from Kingsholm Road.

All road users, including residents of Alvin Street, must follow this one-way traffic flow at all times.

From 10 June until October 2026, London Road will be closed to westbound traffic (towards the city centre) between Great Western Road and the Black Dog Way/Bruton Way junction.
Eastbound traffic will remain open at all times.

A clearly signposted diversion route will be in place to assist road users travelling through the area.

Please allow extra time for your journey during these works.

For more detailed information, see the section below.

Black Dog Way and London Road walking and cycling improvements

Construction is underway at the Black Dog Way junction, having started on 9 February. A Meet the Contractor event took place on Wednesday 4 February 2026 at Gloucester Heritage Hub, Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester GL1 3DW.

Lane widths have been reduced on approaches to the junction and a temporary mini roundabout installed. From the start of the project, turning right from London Road onto Black Dog Way is no longer available, and this change is now permanent. This measure is essential for maintaining junction capacity, improving traffic flow and protecting priority for buses and emergency vehicles.

An overview of the proposed phases of work can be found here.

🚴Information for cyclists🚴
Northgate Street is closed to all traffic during construction, including cyclists. If you are travelling in this direction via London Road, please dismount where indicated and follow the pedestrian diversion using the footway.
Thank you for your patience while these improvements are carried out.

🚌 Great Western Road Bus Stop (outside Esso Garage) – Closure
The Great Western Road bus stop on London Road (outside the Esso Garage) was closed on 3 April 2026. This stop has been permanently removed, with a new replacement stop to be provided on Northgate Street as part of the project. Passengers travelling to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital should use the Depot bus stop as the nearest alternative.

ðŸšŒ Great Western Road Bus Stop (outside Badham's Pharmacy) – Temporary suspension

The bus stop on London Road outside the Badham’s Pharmacy will be temporarily suspended from 26 June to allow for trial holes and pavement works. The nearest bus stop is the Depot bus stop.

Temporary Traffic Layout - mini-roundabout

A new temporary traffic layout mini-roundabout at the junction is now in place.

This arrangement will remain in place until later phases of the project, when the permanent junction layout and traffic signals are reinstated.

The temporary mini‑roundabout is a tried and tested way of managing traffic during construction. It has been used successfully on other busy routes, such as the B4063 and the A435, helping to keep vehicles moving while work takes place.

We will be keeping a close eye on how it operates once installed, and we kindly ask drivers to approach the junction with care as everyone gets used to the temporary layout.

The left‑hand filter lane on London Road will remain in use until a later stage of the project.

🚦To help people cross safely, temporary signal‑controlled pedestrian crossings are in place on both Black Dog Way and Bruton Way. Please note that these signals are only for pedestrian crossings, they do not control the roundabout. Drivers should continue to follow normal roundabout rules and give way as usual.

Pedestrian diversion directing people to Black Dog Way

Temporary pedestrian crossings have also been installed on London Road as part of the Phase 3 works.

Phase 3 works from 21 April 2026

From 21 April, the footpath between the Great Western Road junction and No. 20 London Road will be temporarily closed to enable the next phase of works to take place. The footpath is expected to now reopen after 9 June, subject to progress on site. This phase of work will be carried out alongside the ongoing Phase 2 works (outside St Peter's church).

During this phase, works will include site clearance, upgrades to the existing drainage, improvements to the signalised pedestrian crossing, and alterations to the current footway alongside the construction of a new cycle lane.

Access for Wellington Parade residents will be maintained throughout the works, with vehicle access to car parks and properties available.

From 2 June from until early October 2026, Alvin Street will operate as a temporary one way system to allow for works at the entrance to Alvin Street to commence. There will be no vehicular access onto Alvin Street from the Kingsholm Road direction and this restriction will apply to all road users, including residents.

Residents and business letter regarding Alvin Street update is available here.

To enable the contractor to move efficiently into the next section of Phase 3, specifically along the footpath between the bridge and Robert Limbrick’s building, a temporary change to traffic management will be introduced. London Road will be closed in the westbound direction (for traffic travelling towards the Black Dog Way/Bruton Way junction/city centre) between Great West Road and the Black Dog Way/Bruton Way junction.

Eastbound traffic will remain open throughout, and a clearly signposted diversion route will be in place to help road users navigate the area as smoothly as possible. This arrangement will be in place from 10 June until early October 2026. While we understand this may cause some inconvenience, the limited road width means it is not possible to safely maintain two-way traffic while protecting both the public and the workforce.

Cyclists travelling towards the city centre will be asked to dismount and use the footway, as cycling against the traffic flow will not be permitted during this period.

A plan showing the working areas, along with pedestrian and official traffic diversion routes, is available in the Traffic Management section of this webpage.

We recognise how important it is to maintain clear and convenient access for hospital visitors and staff, and we are working to introduce additional signage along diversion routes to help make journeys as straightforward as possible.

Additional travel advice to drivers:

  • Drivers travelling from Walls Roundabout (east and northeast) are advised to use Eastern Avenue and Metz Way.
  • Drivers approaching from the A40 and Cheltenham Road (east) are encouraged to remain on the A40 via Longford Roundabout or use Estcourt Road via Kingsholm Road Roundabout.
  • Drivers leaving Gloucester Royal Hospital are advised to travel via Great Western Road and Horton Road.

Northgate and Southgate Street

We are pleased to share that most of the Phase 1 improvements are now complete, helping to make the city centre more welcoming and easier to navigate for both cyclists and pedestrians.

A few final tasks are still underway:

Northgate Street

As part of the ongoing improvements to Northgate Street and surrounding areas, works to apply the imprinted (coloured) surface to sections of the footway and crossing points are scheduled to begin from 26 May 2026.

This element of the scheme requires warm and dry weather conditions to ensure the surface coating is applied correctly and achieves a durable, high-quality finish. For this reason, it was not possible to complete these works during late autumn or the winter period.

With suitable weather conditions now available, the works have been programmed and will be delivered alongside temporary traffic management measures to ensure safety.

Traffic Management Arrangements

To facilitate the works, the following temporary measures will be in place:

  • St Aldate Street
Closed to traffic on 23 June from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Diversions will be in place, and emergency access will be maintained.

This closure is required to complete cleaning works and apply the colour coating to the road
edging, following delays caused by wet weather.

We appreciate your patience while these improvements are completed and will make every effort to minimise disruption and maintain access wherever possible.

Southgate Street

The permanent pedestrian crossing near the Tall Ship could not be delivered at this stage due to issues with underground utilities. It will now be included in the next phase of Southgate Street improvements, planned for later this year. Until then, the current arrangements continue to provide a safe and reliable place to cross.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation throughout these improvements.
