Holidays in term time

More information about the dates of SATs test can be found on the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) website linked from this article.

These term dates show the holidays recommendedby the Local Authority.  Foundation and Voluntary Aided Schools are able to amend these dates to suit their local needstherefore the dates below may be altered at individual schools. Schools may also choose to hold a teachers' in-service training day within term time (up to 5 days per year), therefore the date on which term ends, or starts, for pupils at different schools may change.

You should therefore contact your child's school for their precise term dates

Holidays in term time

Each year a number of children are absent because their parents take them away on holiday during term time.

A pupil's absence can seriously disrupt the continuity of their learning. Not only do they miss the teaching provided on the days they are away; they are also less prepared for lessons upon their return. There is a consequent risk of under achievement, which you and we must seek to avoid.

Time off school for family holidays is not a right. Schools have discretion in 'exceptional circumstance' to authorise a holiday if they believe it is a genuine reason. Parents can be given a penalty notice or prosecuted for periods of unauthorised holidays.

Absence from school which has not been approved by the school in writing is unauthorised absenceand as such may result in a penalty notice or prosecution for non-attendance. For further information about parents rights and responsibilities please visit the DCSF website (link below). The Local Authority's Attendance Policy can also be downloaded from this page.
