Archaeology Service
Information and advice on the archaeology and historic environment of Gloucestershire
The Archaeology Service provides information and advice on the archaeology and historic environment of Gloucestershire, and undertakes a wide range of research, survey and fieldwork in the county. Who are we? Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service maintain the County Sites and Monuments Records (SMR), provide advice on planning issues to developers and landowners, and supply information to students and other members of the public. We also carry out building and landscape surveys, archaeological desk-based assessments, watching briefs and excavations, offer advice on planning issues and provide an outreach education service. What is the Festival of British Archaeology? The Festival of British Archaeology (formerly National Archaeology Week) is your unique chance to discover and explore the archaeological heritage of the United Kingdom. During this two-week archaeological extravaganza, which will run from Saturday 18th July to Sunday 2nd August, you can take part in excavation open days, hands-on activities, family fun days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures, ancient art and craft workshops and much, much more. The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) who coordinate this annual event are an educational charity who work throughout the UK to promote and involve people in archaeology and encourage an appreciation of the historic environment for generations to come. The aim of this national event is to encourage everyone, including young people and their families to visit sites of archaeological/historical interest or museums, heritage and resource centres, to see archaeology in action and to take part in activities on site. The Archaeology Service is organising events taking place during the Festival! We're having a Roman food day at Great Witcombe Roman villa. The event is on Sunday 19th July from 12pm until 4pm. Not only will you be able to taste some of the food the Romans ate you will also be able to pick up recipe cards and take a tour of the villa. We will also be running a Victorian excavation session for children at the Dean Heritage Centre, Camp Mill, Soudley on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August between 11am and 3pm.
