Cycling in Gloucestershire

Information on cycling, cycle routes in the county and beyond and cycle safety

National Cycle Network Route Closure  Route 41 Gloucester & Sharpness Canal - The towparth is closed south of Gloucester between Hempsted Bridge and Smis Bridge, until the Gloucester Quays development is finished in 2009.  Route 45 Gloucester to Maisemore - A section off-road path next to the A417 has been damaged by floods and the route is closed for the unforseeable future.  The A417 road itself is not damaged and remains open.

Cycling can be a reality for short journeys for many people, in fact cycling can change your life!  Cycling can help you manage your budget (very cost efficient), your health (get that heart pumping) and your local environment (be climate change aware).  Once you get cycling you will quickly see the benefits and you won't want to stop.

So what do you need to get you started? A bicycle that is the right size for you and in good working order with working brakes, reflectors, and lights.  We would advise getting a helmet and a fluorescent/reflective jacket to be seen in poor visibility and at night.  We sell virtually at cost price road safety and high visibility equipment contact 01452 426806 or email ann.palmer@gloucestershire.gov.uk for a leaflet.  For a table of information on how to choose a the correct frame size visit www.traceymaidsports.com.

You may feel a bit nervous or rusty if you haven't been on a bicycle for a while, so Life Cycle Uk can help with adult cycling training to get your confidence for on road cycling back again.  Visit www.lifecycleuk.org.uk for more information or contact post@lifecycleuk.org.uk or telephone 0117 929 0440.  The majority of junior schools in Gloucestershire offer cycle training for children through our Road Safety Unit.

There are links to maps of cycle routes through the attached district council website and the National Cycle Network from this page.  Here are some useful contacts for free cycle route maps (except for Stroud District Cycling Map of £2.50 charge):
