School attendance and the Education Welfare ServiceParents have a legal responsibility to make sure that their school-registered child attends school regularly. The Education Welfare Officers work with parents and schools to support regular school attendance.![]() The Education Welfare Services main task is to work with families and young people where the level of absence is giving cause for concern. The Education Welfare Officer will visit the home and talk with students and parents about attendance and seek to resolve issues and achieve a return to school. However, should there be no genuine reason for absence the Education Welfare Officer has the power to prosecute the parents for not sending their children to school under Section 444 (1) or 1(A) of the Education Act 1996. The Education Welfare Officer will work in partnership with the school where there are concerns about school attendance. They will also work with other agencies to seek a resolution to problems preventing a child attending school. Your Education Welfare Officer is available to discuss concerns you may have. You can find out who your school's Education Welfare Officer is by asking the school or telephoning the main Education Welfare Office on 01452 550505.
