Education

Schools, Pre-School Education & Further and Higher Education

Schools:

Education is compulsory in England for children aged 5 - 16 years. It is free.

Infant School is for children aged 5 - 7 years
Junior School is for children aged 8 - 11 years
These are usually on the same site and combined as a Primary School

Secondary School is for children aged 11 - 16 years
Secondary School - Sixth Form or Further Education College is for students aged 16 - 18 years

To find out about schools near you, go to Shire Hall, Westgate Street. At reception, ask to speak to someone from the Education Department.

Pre-School Education

Parent and Toddler groups:

These offer an opportunity for parents to meet and talk, while their children (usually aged between birth and 3+) play together safely. Parents stay at the group and supervise their own children. Other adults will also be there to help the children play and allow the parents to talk.

It's a good place to get to know other parents who live in your area. These groups charge a very small amount for each session and some of the groups may not charge anything.

Call PATA on 01452 541245 for a list of these groups.

Playgroups or pre-school groups:

Children between the ages of 2 and a half - 5 years old can go to a playgroup or pre-school group. This is where they play, learn and meet other children. The children stay at the group without their parents, usually for 2 or 3 mornings or afternoons a week. It is a good preparation for them as then they start school.

Shire Hall Education Department has a list of these groups, and can help you to find a place for your child.

Further and Higher Education and Courses:

Further Education:

From aged 16 years. Pupils can continue at a Secondary School, taking courses in the Sixth Form or may transfer to a Further Education College.

Includes courses leading to academic qualifications e.g. GCSE, A levels, NVQ as well as Vocational Courses e.g. Hairdressing, Vehicle Maintenance.

Higher Education:

Higher level courses lead to HND and degree level qualifications. Fees must usually be paid.
