Difficult and Bulky WasteFind out how to dispose of difficult waste![]() AsbestosIt is not advisable to remove asbestos-containing material yourself - it is a dangerous operation which can result in the release of small asbestos fibres into the air. Breathing in these fibres can eventually lead to a number of fatal diseases. It is recommended that you engage the services of a professional and licensed contractor to remove asbestos. Details of licensed contractors can be found on the Health & Safety Executive's website at www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/ [Opens in New Window]. The HSE website also contains lots of information about the hazards associated with asbestos removal and advice about safety precautions. Gloucestershire County Council provides household asbestos disposal facilities. Telephone the County Council's help line on 01242 680010 and they will book you in to a disposal site with an appointment time. Asbestos waste for disposal must be double bagged and you should note that the disposal container opening measures 1000x800mm and 2200mm deep. Gloves and masks are available for your use at the disposal point if you require them. Gas BottlesShould as far as possible be returned to the company whose name is written on the bottle (Legally gas cylinders always remain the property of the manufacturer). TyresShould be returned to a local tyre fitter. Ski Tyres (01242 519972) are an example. A small charge per tyre will be made for this service. The County Council provides chemical banks at all the Household Recycling Centres in which tins of paint can be deposited. If the paint is water based i.e. emulsion and has dried up then it can be placed in with the non-recyclables at any of the five household recycling centres (HRCs). For large quantities of usable paint try contacting the Gloucestershire Resource Centre (01452) 504442.
