Deputies announced for Lord-Lieutenant
March 27th, 2012 - Dame Janet Trotter, Gloucestershire's Lord- Lieutenant, has announced three new deputies. (issued on behalf of the Lord-Lieutenant's office)
The number of Deputy Lord-Lieutenants is dependant on the county's population and three new appointments have now been made.
The new Deputies have all made significant contributions either to national life or to their local communities - or both. They are:
- Mr Clive Lewis OBE, Chair of the (SW) Open College Network & Honorary Secretary of Civil Mediation Authority, is from Gloucester
- Professor Steven West, Vice-Chancellor of UWE, is from Mangotsfield
- Mrs Shazia Riaz, Member of Avon & Somerset Police Authority, is from Downend
Lord-Lieutenant, Dame Janet Trotter said: "It has been a wonderful and busy first year for me and I am delighted to announce new Deputies to assist in the work of the Lieutenancy. Their role is important to Gloucestershire life and their varied backgrounds will enable us to have deep roots into the county and to continue to serve it effectively in future."
Dame Janet Trotter has been the Queen's ceremonial representative for Gloucestershire since October 2010 and is responsible for a wide range of duties, including civic events. The high volume of events and duties taking place in the county means that it is necessary for her to have deputies to share some of the load.
Gloucestershire has had a Lord-Lieutenant since 1559. The role was originally tasked with training local men and leading them against rebels and foreign invaders.
