Q: At what age do children start primary school?
A: The law requires that children reach school age following their fifth birthday.
-
Q: Can my child start later?
A: If parents so wish, their child's entry can be delayed until the beginning of Term 3 or Term 5, provided that he/she starts in the term after their fifth birthday. Places will be held for them in primary schools but parents should notify the primary school offered of their intention to delay their child's entry.
-
Q: Who decides whether a child may attend a particular primary school or not?
A: For every school, there is an admission authority. The admission authority is the body, which has the legal power to decide on admissions to schools. The admission authority varies according to the legal status of the school.
-
Q: How do I apply for a place at a primary school?
A: Most parents will know the local primary school(s) in their area. There may be only one primary school near your home or there may be several. Schools will generally make appointments for parents to come and see the school.
-
Q: How do I apply on-line?
A: You can apply on-line for a primary school place between the end of October and the closing date (in 2010 this was 15 January)
-
Q: My child will be starting junior school but does not have a unique identifier number (UID)?
A: Children who have already been registered with us will be given a unique identifier number (UID) when they transfer from infant to junior school. If you do not have a UID for your child (because you are transferring from an independent school or moving into the area for example) you will need to register your child with us.
-
Q: What happens if I am unhappy with the school allocated to my child?
A: We try to ensure that we meet as many parental preferences as possible. If you are unhappy with an alternative school, then discuss the situation with staff in the Schools Admissions Team in Shire Hall.
-
Q: Where can I get more information about school admissions?
A: Every year the School Admission Team publish a guide for parents.
-
Q:
Can I hold the offer of a place at one school but still go on the waiting lists for other schools?
A: Yes. In fact, even if you are not happy with the place that has been offered, we recommend you accept it. This way, you can be sure your child has a school to attend in September 2010 – even if you lose an appeal or your child does not reach the top of the waiting list.
-
Q: How is it possible for a child to go up and down a waiting list?
A: The order of priority on a waiting list will follow the admission criteria for the school. Children may move up or down the list as other children are offered places or as they join the list.
-
Q: How long can my child stay on a school waiting list?
A: Waiting lists are kept up until the 22nd October 2010 or longer depending on the school. If the new school year approaches, and you have not been successful in gaining a place at your preferred school, start to think positively about the alternative place your child has been offered. Once the new school year starts, you can stay in contact with your most preferred school to see if there is the chance of a transfer in the future.
