Verges and Grass Cutting

Gloucestershire Highways are responsible for verges within the boundary of the public highway.

Verge and grass cutting maintenance is carried out to maintain safety, prevent obstruction of sight lines and traffic signs, stop the growth of harmful weeds and to maintain a tidy appearance.

Grass Cutting
We have the following policy :

  • We will aim to carry out a minimum of 5 cuts a year in urban areas (providing our budget allows this).
  • We aim to cut growth twice a year in rural areas.

Grass cutting is carried out to:

  • maintain sight line visibility at junctions and bends for highway users
  • prevent traffic signs and bollards being obscured
  • provide a pedestrian refuge where no footway exists
  • control brushwood and scrub
  • lessen any risk of fire
  • prevent the loss of width of paved surfaces
  • prevent the spread of noxious weeks (under the Weeds Act 1959)
  • maintain and enhance the biodiversity of road side verges (where compatible with road safety).

If you would like grass cutting to be carried out in a particular area, and it meets the criteria listed above, please contact us.

We are also responsible for:

  • removing surface water, vegetation and debris from the verge
  • stripping and storing existing top soil where necessary
  • filling ruts with suitable material
  • regrading of existing verge levels
  • topsoiling, seeding and planting

You can help keep verges free from obstruction by following these basic steps:

  • Don't drive on them as this may cause damage to easements, ditches and grips. Bringing mud and water onto the road causes a hazard and weakens the road edges, and driving on verges can also damage your vehicle and harm wildlife.
  • Don't put stones on the verge to prevent inconsiderate parking
  • Don't leave farm materials on highway verges
  • Don't park machinery on highway verges

If you would like to maintain the highway verge outside your property, either by planting or grass cutting, you must obtain the necessary consents. Please contact us for application details.
