Advice for Elderly and Disabled Travellers

When planning your journey and making enquiries, you may find the following information useful.

Buses:

Remember that few buses in the county now carry a conductor and that if you have a disability you may not be able to use ordinary bus and coach services.

However, more and more low-floor buses are entering service.  Please contact your local operator for availability.

Some adapted buses are available for hire by groups to enable able-bodied and those with disabilities to travel together.

Trains:

Rail companies are making improvements to stations and trains to make travel easier for people with a mobility problem.

Signs with a purple background indicate special facilities.

Modern Inter-City trains have wide doors and grab-rails and now have a removable seat and table to enable a passenger to travel in a wheelchair.

On the latest local trains, there are wide power-operated sliding doors, low floors and mobile ramps.

Whenever possible, disabled rail users should make an advance reservation on 08457 484950 to ensure access availability.

Remember that the more disabled people who travel by public transport, the more operators will learn about their issues and the more likely they are to introduce better facilities.
