Car ClubEver thought it might be cheaper to share a car? Do you own a car, but rarely use it?7 June 2003 saw the launch of the Stroud Valleys Car Club, when David Drew MP handed over a brand new Vauxhall Zafira for the use of club members. The Car Club aims to give local people options on car ownership. Instead of owning their own car, with all the attendant cost and hassle, club members share car ownership through a membership fee (opening offer £70/year) and book and pay for a car only when they need it (£1.80/hr + 18p/mile). Cars are located at reserved parking spots in Slad Road and Bisley Road (the Zafira is about to be joined by a Corsa). Studies have shown that each car club takes up to five private cars off the road, reducing congestion and pollution. In addition to saving themselves money, car club members lead healthier life styles as, without the millstone of car ownership, they are more inclined to make rational choices about when it is best to walk, cycle, use public transport or book the car club vehicle.
