Gloucestershire is host to some of the finest walking and riding routes in the country, including parts of three National Trails.

Walking is set to play a bigger role in creating a healthier nation. Described by health experts as 'almost perfect exercise', walking requires no equipment or expense and is the ideal way for most people to become more active. Seven out of every ten people in this country are not physically active enough to benefit their health!

The countryside is open. No Gloucestershire paths are closed as a consequence of outbreaks of any diseases in the UK.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 has created new rights to walk on "access land" - defined as mountain, moor, heath or down, and registered common land.

The Gloucestershire Local Access Forum plays an important role in offering strategic advice and comment to Gloucestershire County Council and Natural England on the improvement of access.
