About the County Council's Children & Young People's Directorate

The County Council's services for children and young people were brought together in 2006.

In April 2006, Gloucestershire County Council's children and young people's services were brought together under one directorate, known as the Children and Young People's Directorate (CYPD).

The new directorate came in response to the government's 'Every Child Matters: Change for Children' agenda. It means that children and young people's services provided by, or commissioned by the council, such as education, social care and youth services, are all managed by one directorate, under the direction of a Director of Children's Services. Under the Children Act 2004, all local authorities must have a Director of Children's Services (DCS). This role was, until recently, undertaken by Jo Davidson, who stepped down at the end of June (2010). Although Duncan Jordan, formerly Group Director for the County Council's Environment Directorate, pictured left, took up the role of Group Director of the Children and Young People's Directorate on 1st July 2010, he is not carrying out the DCS role, as this is a statutory role to be carried out by a specialist. A new Director of Children's Services for Gloucestershire is to be announced.

Four years on, the internal structure of the council's Children and Young People's Directorate continues to undergo change to meet the needs of the county's children and young people, and the difficult economic climate. Changes to how we work at the council are part of a wider change programme aimed at bringing closer working between all organisations involved in providing or commissioning services for children and young people in Gloucestershire.

Adult services

The council's Education and Social Services directorates no longer exist. Adult social care has moved into a new directorate called Community and Adult Care (C&AC). This directorate brings together other community services such as libraries and adult education, and maintains strong links with children and young people's services.
