Home Library Service
We offer a home delivery service for customers who love reading or listening to audio books who are, for any reason, confined to their homes and who don't have anyone to visit the library for them.
How to receive this service
Phone 0845 230 5420 and ask to speak to your local library. Ask library staff to arrange a volunteer to visit you. Any information you give will be treated confidentially.
Library staff will contact you to make an appointment to visit you about the service. They will be carrying identity and will expect you to check it before you let them into your home.
The volunteer will ask you what sort of books you like which then helps when choosing items from the library for you.
After that you should receive a service as soon as possible.
What can you borrow?
The volunteer will bring a selection of materials to your home and you can choose from them. You can choose from any of our books, audio books and for a small charge films and music. Visit the online library catalogue for our entire collection - all available to you to borrow.
If you would like a particular book or books on a subject you want to know more about, ask the volunteer. They will tell local library staff who will try to get the books you want. It helps if you can provide us with as much information about the book or subject as possible. These requests will be provided free of charge.
What if you can't see very well?
A wide range of books in large print can be provided, or you might prefer to listen to books on CD or digital books.
How often will the volunteer call?
The volunteers usually visit once every four weeks, though in some cases the service is fortnightly. However, the day and time are usually arranged to suit you both.
Can you help?
We welcome volunteers to help deliver books to housebound people, find out more on our volunteering pages (DBS - Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly known as CRB is required for this role).
