Berkeley Bridge improvements

During the 1950s Berkeley New Bridge was built as a temporary structure to allow widening of the A38 road. It meant that two way traffic could cross the Gloucester to Bristol railway line safely.

Routine inspections found that the bridge had deteriorated and needed either major maintenance or replacement.

Since the bridge is over a mainline railway it would be expensive and difficult to undertake maintenance so a decision was taken to replace the bridge.

Replacing the whole bridge will help maintain a flow of traffic in both directions and reduce congestion in the long term. The scheme is being completed in two phases.

This plan supports the future additional housing and employment planned for the Berkeley area, including major redevelopment at Sharpness Docks. The A38 is the signed diversion route if there is a closure on the M5 motorway and the new bridge will also support increased traffic if these incidents happen.

The Berkeley Bridges Improvement Scheme is part financed by the Gloucestershire Growth Deal 2015 to 2021 and partly by Gloucestershire County Council.

The scheme is made up of:

  • Preparing both north and south bound bridges for the new bridge and doing maintenance on the older bridge
  • Demolishing the existing 'new' bridge
  • Replacing it with a steel and concrete bridge with footpath

Phase one is complete and phase two, during which the new bridge was lifted into place, commenced in January 2017.

The road will remain under traffic light control until the opening of the new bridge at the end of June 2017. Road users are advised to plan their journey and allow extra time whilst the temporary lights remain in place.
