Cinderford Northern Quarter Spine Road

Scheme Summary

Construction of the Cinderford Northern Quarter Spine Road is a vital part of the drive to regenerate the Cinderford Northern Quarter as it will open up the site to deliver new jobs, businesses and investment to the town.

It is planned to construct the road in two phases:-

Phase 1: Broadmoor Road to Cinderford Brook will provide access to the education campus.

Phase 2: Cinderford Brook up to the bend before the Northern United site will unlock the land for the planned hotel, office and residential developments.  This phase will then follow on from the Northern United site to the A4136 to provide the link through to the A4136 and access further sites for office as well as industrial use.

The project secured planning approval in Nov 2014 with a planning decision notice and S106 signed on 26 February 2015.

Funding for the first phase of the road was secured in December 2015 when Gloucestershire's Local Enterprise Partnership GFirst confirmed a £3.8m grant through the Local Growth Deal.

The primary aim of phase 1 of the spine road is to provide access to the Gloucestershire College site to enable the construction of a new college campus. Phase 1 of the road will see the construction of approximately 600m of new road which will incorporate realignment of the existing Newtown Road and Broadmoor Road junction, a new wide span bridge over the Old Engine Brook as well as a temporary bus turning area next to the new college site (which will be removed when Phase 2 of the road is constructed).  Buckingham Group Contracting Limited were awarded the contract which is expected to be completed in Spring 2017.
