Extended services

By 2010, the Government wants all children, young people and families to be able to access a variety of activities and services in or through schools.

Schools may choose to provide these services themselves or may work in partnership with neighbouring schools and partners in the community to provide these services.

The core offer for extended services in maintained and special schools is:

• childcare: high quality, affordable childcare around the school day, all year round (primary schools only)
• activities: a varied menu of activities, for example sport, music tuition, drama etc, including study support
• swift and easy access: to a wide range of specialist support services, for example speech therapy, family support and specialist services
• parenting support opportunities, including family learning and information
• community use of school buildings: wider community access to computing, sports and arts facilities, including adult learning

Gloucestershire is also committed to ensuring that all schools are "healthy schools".

The Government requires all professionals working with children and young people to undertake common assessments and organise themselves so that any child with additional needs has a 'lead professional' to coordinate services. In Gloucestershire, our extended services programme provides training and development for schools and other agencies on these areas as well as advice on other elements of the core offer.

Rather than operate two distinct change programmes across the county, this work is being integrated with new area focused SHAPE Teams (SHAPE reflecting the 5 Every Child Matters Outcomes- Safe, Healthy, Achieving and enjoying, Positive Contribution and Economic wellbeing) delivering the programme locally.

Extended service clusters

Gloucestershire County Council has established supportive, local, clustering arrangements that encourage partnership working between schools and key local organisations to provide services for children and families. To this end, countywide clusters of schools have been developed based upon agreed principles.
