Directory Database Scam
A school in Gloucestershire has been invoiced for £876 after signing a request to check information that was held about the school. The Headteacher unwittingly signed the document without realising that they were committing the school to a fee for inclusion in an alleged company directory database. The cost is £73 per month, invoiced in advance for 12 months, with a commitment for a further 12 months. An early termination fee of £398 has been quoted when the school responded that they did not want the service being invoiced for.
The company involved, Company-Database, is apparently based in Valencia, Spain. They operate by sending a letter prominently asking that the school check the data, of company name, address, telephone number, industry type, email, fax no, etc. In small print it says: By signing the basic entry for two years will be ordered binding. Apply published on the internet at company-database.net terms and conditions. The fee to be charged was also mentioned in this small print but written as 73£ monthly for two years. Schools need to be aware that they should be vigilant about signing/returning anything to such a company for services to be included in a company directory which, will at best be of no use to the school and at worst does not exist, but in either case could cost the school £1,752. The english and grammar on both the original letter and subsequent invoice is very poor and is an indication that this is not a legitimate company.
Please be aware that this methodology is often used by other companies too.
