Method of selecting content for testing

Web pages

Because our site uses templates, we have taken a hybrid approach:

  • Building a test site with all core resources and available editable assets - these were tested in all available colour themes
  • Taking a random sample of 30 other pages*
  • Evaluating specific task resources which involve on-site forms, including our events sub-system

Sample sizes

We have approximately 6500 each of generic pages & news items which are overwhelmingly the most common types. The type with significant numbers is the Content Section Entry with 1800 pages. All other non-task types have fewer instances than would qualify to be included in the sample & evaluating one page in the test site is considered adequate.

Media

We have 28300 documents & 12615 on the server but the selection of files to review is linked with the pages sampled. All documents related to these pages were reviewed and assessed as being accessible or not.

PDF

PDFs are checked for tagging and machine readability (including image alt text) and checked for possible contrast issues. Any problems result in a "fail" for the document.

Documents

Documents fall into x categories:

  1. Open document format: checked as well-formed and for readability and contrast issues
  2. Plain text formats (txt, csv, etc) considered accessible
  3. Proprietary Microsoft Open XML formats (docx, xlsx, pptx, etc): checked as well-formed and for readability and contrast issues
  4. Proprietary Microsoft Office formats (doc, xls, ppt, etc): not considered accessible & being replaced with newer formats.
  5. Other (mp4, mp3, etc.)

The self-selecting sample is necessarily small, however, the reviewer is an experienced member of the Communications Team with extensive knowledge of our website and its shortcomings. They used this experience to seek out known problems which our devolved authorship model tends to cause (e.g. documents scanned into PDF with no text alternative).
