Gloucestershire Archives Wins the ARA (UK and Ireland) 2019 Volunteering Award

As this is Explore Your Archives week, we are particularly delighted to announce that Gloucestershire Archives has been awarded the Archives & Record Association (UK & Ireland) 2019 Volunteering Award.

The award was presented to Gloucestershire Archives at an award ceremony held at Llanthony Secunda Priory, on Friday 15th November. Over 90 people attended the event – volunteers, partners and staff, as well as Aideen Ireland (President of ARA) and Karl Magee (Chair of ARA).

There was lots of tea and cake to celebrate, and two short films were shown to illustrate the work of volunteers – one about our community garden, and one about the Never Better creative drama project focussing on mental health.

Sarah Orton, from the Culture Trust, gave a presentation about Engage in Gloucester, a Volunteer Makers project to recruit volunteers using an online tool.

At any one time, Gloucestershire Archives works with up to 200 volunteers, and this award is very much for them and all they have achieved in the last year. We would like to say a big thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, past and present. And to all those partner volunteers, especially from Gloucestershire Family History Society, who help to make the Heritage Hub the welcoming place it is.

Volunteering is very much about fresh starts, developing ideas and confidence in new tasks, nurturing and growth; to honour this, guests were invited to take a packet of sweet pea seeds as a memento of the afternoon.
