Kayleigh Laws, Advanced Practitioner

Hi I’m Kayleigh Laws and I’m an advanced practitioner

I started at GCC in 2012 and initially I was a family support worker in a targeted support team. I had qualified as a social worker but I worked as a family support worker briefly and six months later i became a social worker at GCC. I later became a senior practitioner and now I’m an advanced practitioner.

Since I started at GCC, I have definitely enjoyed the career progression and moving into more of a teaching role as an advanced practitioner. Working with students and ASYE’s - that progression is something that really interests me. Also, the experiences I have had working with children and families has just been amazing.

The most challenging aspect of my career so far has been the emotional aspect of working in a child protection role. Now we are in smaller teams, our team manager manages less social workers’ so we get a lot of support from them as well as great peer support. That really helps with that side of the role.

The career progression at GCC is really good. There is a real drive to move from social worker to senior social worker and advanced practitioner, if you want to. There are great opportunities for social workers here which is brilliant.

Gloucestershire is a lovely place to work. There is a real community feel in Gloucestershire. Everything is quite close and partner agencies are close together too. That’s a really nice part of working here.
