Our Learning and Development programme focuses on our social work and aims to support and challenge you at all stages of your career in Gloucestershire Children’s Services.

Our programme has four key aims:

  • The needs of children and families are understood
  • Children are at the centre
  • Children benefit from our help
  • We understand and improve the impact of our work.

Our Social Work Academy provides a variety of learning opportunities that help social workers improve and develop their practice. Training is delivered through:

  • Locality based practice based workshops
  • Coaching & mentoring within teams via the Practice Learning Team
  • Commissioned courses
  • Specific development programmes on effective supervision and restorative practice management
  • On line learning via Research in Practice (RiP) and links to RiP resources within all our internal and external training
  • Access to regional development forums and specific local learning opportunities via RiP
  • Promotion and provision of self directed learning (books / research)
  • Gloucestershire Safeguarding Childrens Board training
  • Development of practitioner forums and identification of learning needs via team needs analysis.
  • Promotion of Advance Practitioner and Senior Social Worker led team based learning sets, informed by external training or key practice development areas identified through performance surgeries, audit, local issues or individual need.
  • Continued provision of targeted support and challenge via consultant and Principal Social Worker links to localities and teams and facilitation of learning opportunities, ‘pop up’ events, observed practice and co-production with practitioners and young people.

All of our priorities directly link to the Knowledge & Skills Statements and Children’s Service’s Practice Standards. This connects to our career pathway and expectations, including expected case loads for ASYE / Social Workers / Senior Social Workers and Advanced Practitioner.

Our service is made up of smaller teams, enabling our Team Managers to provide regular supervision and mentoring for our Social Workers. Our teams also include an Advanced Practitioner who will work with Social Workers to improve practice and challenge within a supportive environment.



Our ASYE training programme for Newly Qualified Social Workers will support you to grow and develop to work on the front line alongside experienced and established Social Workers within your team. Find out more by visiting our ASYE page. 



We are committed to embedding restorative practice in the way we work with families and each other. Restorative practice is a term used to describe a way of behaving which helps to build and maintain healthy relationships, resolve difficulties and repair harm where there has been conflict.

Restorative practices enable those who work with children and families to focus upon building relationships that create change. Creating change sometimes requires challenge as well as support. When we work with and alongside people, rather than make decisions about them in isolation, there is strong evidence to say that outcomes for children and their families are improved.

Restorative practices range from formal to informal processes that enable workers, managers, children, young people and their families to communicate effectively. The processes used focus upon removing barriers, proactively promoting a sense of community, understanding, social responsibility and shared accountability.

Restorative practices are an important part of the way in which we support families to become better equipped to solve their difficulties and address challenges.
