Chairman's role

The Chairman is the civic leader of Gloucestershire.

Cllr Shaun Parsons (Chairman) (Conservative)

Cllr Andrew Gravells (Vice-Chairman) (Conservative)

At the annual meeting in May, full council elects a new chairman. He or she must be a serving county councillor but not a member of the cabinet.

The chairman's ceremonial duties include:

  • being the civic leader of Gloucestershire
  • promoting the interests and the reputation of the county council and Gloucestershire and acting as an ambassador for both
  • carrying out civic, community and ceremonial activities and fostering community identity and pride
  • presiding over meetings of the full council to ensure that its business is carried out fairly and efficiently
