School Governors

Published
18.07.2017

School governors have a vital role to play in supporting and challenging school leaders, helping ensure that young people are given every opportunity to reach their potential.

In all maintained schools, and some academies, there is a governor nominated by the Local Authority. Like many other local authorities, in Gloucestershire we ask the county councillor for the division in which the school sits to nominate this governor when a vacancy arises. The governing board of the school will decide whether to appoint the person nominated, basing their decision on the experience and capabilities of the nominee, and the skills required on the governing board at that particular time.

LA governors are not expected to represent any particular group. The important thing is their commitment to the best interests of the school.

You may know someone you could nominate from your own contacts, or sometimes the school, or the Governor Services team in Shire Hall, may have a name to put forward to you for consideration.

Jennie Leighton from the Governor Services team will be contacting you shortly with information on the nomination process as well as details of any current vacancies in your Division.
