Back to school advice for parents / carers
With the majority of children and young people being away from school for such an extended period of time, this ‘back to school’ season might feel different to normal.
While this time of year usually brings a flurry of activity, this year might feel a bit more fraught or uncertain.
There are things you can do now to make that transition back to school easier, and ease any anxieties there might be around starting school again.
Below are some ways to help ease your child / children back into the school routine.
All children will feel differently about COVID-19 but some will feel particularly anxious about it. This will be the case especially if family members are considered vulnerable or they have lost someone due to the virus.
Try to limit how much news they hear as this can reinforce worries but do encourage them to ask questions or write down their thoughts and feelings.
Share positive and good news stories about the virus with your child if possible.
Taking part in self-care activities can also help to reduce stress or anxiety. If you feel like they do not want to talk to you or another trusted adult, there are other people they can talk to or find information from. You can direct them to our specific advice for Children and Young People pages.
