This one day course considers a pattern of identified behaviours, characterised by high levels of anxiety, complex social interactions and a need to be in control. Overlapping with autism and sometimes described as “Pathological Demand Avoidance Syndrome” or “Extreme Demand Avoidance Syndrome”, the behaviours can pose considerable challenges for families and settings to manage

Course outcomes
- To understand the background to the identification of this pattern of behaviours
- To have an awareness of current issues around diagnosis across the country
- To give practitioners practical approaches to use with children and young people who display behaviours associated with demand avoidance
- To consider ways to foster and develop the learning potential and emotional well being of children and young people who are highly anxious and demand avoidant
- To consider the challenges of parenting a child with these behaviours
- To reflect on teaching style and develop skills
