About Gloucestershire

Situated in the heart of the River Severn estuary, Gloucestershire is a historic county in the South West of England. Comprising of the six districts of Cotswolds, Forest of Dean, Stroud, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury and the City of Gloucester, the county is renowned for its picturesque towns and villages and, with a booming tourist industry, attracts thousands of visitors each year. Gloucestershire is a great place to live, work and do business.

Whilst perhaps most renowned for its stunning landscapes, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and protected Green Belt land, Gloucestershire also enjoys a prosperous economy and, despite the impacts of the pandemic, has recently been declared as the UK county most likely to recover strongly from the pandemic. The county is therefore well placed to continue as a strong hive of activity for businesses to truly grow and prosper.

The county is well positioned and has solid infrastructure connections by road and rail to bordering areas including Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Bristol and Somerset. The west part of the county also borders the Welsh county of Monmouthshire. It’s fair to say that Gloucestershire really is the gateway to the west.

Gloucestershire offers a fantastic environment for its 637,070 residents, businesses and visitors. It is home to several national landmarks and major events, including Gloucester Cathedral and Cheltenham Racecourse, as well as numerous animal parks and National Trust and English Heritage sites, not to mention easy access to a range of coastal areas nearby.

Most local people enjoy a high standard of living, and our levels of health and wellbeing are comfortably above the average for the country. Generally, local people are well-educated, unemployment is low and Gloucestershire’s economy is strong and resilient and the local environment is diverse and attractive.

Gloucestershire is also proud to be home to the iconic CGHQ headquarters in Cheltenham; the world-leading intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe, as well as the £400 million cyber-themed Golden Valley Development. As a county, we have a huge ambition to become the cyber capital of the UK and have lots of exciting projects on the horizon to help us to reach this ambition. There are also a number of £multi-million large-scale projects in progress that will continue to drive investment and economic growth even further forward across the county.
