Guidance for parents
Gloucestershire Hospital Education Service (GHES) is an educational service funded by the Local Authority (LA), with a duty to provide appropriate education for young people who are temporarily medically too unwell to attend their main school. This may be due to physical illness, injury or mental health needs. It is a short-term provision whereby as soon as a child is able, they return to their main school.
The service covers three main areas:
- Educational provision for children who are inpatients on the Children’s ward at Gloucester Royal Hospital. This is provided through our teaching team based at GRH.
- Educational provision for children who are under the care of a consultant or CAMHS care-coordinator, that are too unwell to attend school but do not need to be in hospital. This is delivered by our Outreach Team.
- Educational provision for pregnant school girls / school age mothers whilst on maternity leave. This is delivered by our Outreach Team.
Educational provision for children admitted to GRH children’s ward is available to all children who are well enough to engage in learning. The outreach service is for children and young people (from reception to the end of Year 11) residing and attending school in Gloucestershire, who have been referred to GHES by a paediatric consultant or CAMHS care coordinator.
