The Outreach Team (Outpatients)
The Outreach Team
When your child joins GHES, we start by collecting information from the family, medical professionals, the main school and other professionals you may be already open to, to put together a personalised education and support package. The learning journey will be unique and tailored specifically to your child’s age, aptitude, interests and health needs.
We constantly review and revise our provision according to their changing condition and in (where possible) discussion with the medical professional overseeing your child, who guide and informs us when they are well enough to return to their main school.
Link tutor
Your child will be assigned a link tutor when they join us, who will be his/her key point of contact whilst with GHES. The link tutor will meet regularly with your child, supporting his/her emotional wellbeing; liaising with staff and other professionals; and planning and preparing your child for the transition back to school. They are also the key member of staff who will keep the child's main school updated and involved with the progress they are making.
Learning at GHES
Our specialist teaching team offers a blended approach of face to face and online lessons, in groups or one-to-one, depending on your child’s age, needs and ability to access.
- Face to face: in our classroom in Cheltenham, in ‘hubs’ across the county, or at home
- Live online lessons: in small groups or 1:1, we teach a range of subjects
- External provider: Academy 21 provides live and recorded lessons to supplement our offer
- Classroom at County Offices, Cheltenham: PSHE/Connect, art, Arts Award, science practical work and careers all take place in our classroom, as well as other academic subjects and specific interventions.
Curriculum
Our PSHE curriculum is prioritised alongside English, maths and science, although we also offer some non-core subjects, careers advice and online/ e-safety. We teach the National Curriculum from Early Years Foundation Stage, through primary and up to the end of secondary school. We prepare our KS4 students for GCSE and Functional Skills examinations, so that if a child is with us at the end of Year 11 they leave with qualifications necessary for the next stage in their lives.
How do we support reintegration?
GHES is a short stay service, whose core aim is to educate your child whilst ill-health prevents them from attending school, whilst preparing and supporting for their return to their main school, or post 16 setting, when they are medically fit. When your child moves on from GHES, there will be an individualised plan in place to ensure a smooth transition between us and the next setting.
Typical steps in reintegration plans:
- Getting to know one member of staff in the student’s home
- Receiving 1:1 teaching in the home or online
- Joining a small group session/lesson online of in our classroom in Cheltenham
- Receiving teaching in a community setting e.g. cafe or library or in a room at school during a quiet time of the day
- Joining a small class at their main school with support
- Joining peers at their main school to catch up with them socially
- Returning to their main school on a reduced timetable
The aim is always to return the student to their enrolled school but we recognise this can take some time and is different for each young person.
Post-Operative Education
Your child may have pre-planned surgery or unplanned surgery (in an emergency or through a cancellation) at Gloucester Royal Hospital or any other hospital in the UK. Discharge from hospital to home and recovery time can vary greatly, as can the wellness of the child post-surgery to access education.
As soon as you are aware of a planned procedure you should ask your child's school to contact us or provide with information:
