Investing in Cheltenham’s roads

Published

Gloucestershire County Council will be resurfacing part of Winchcombe Street in Cheltenham between 28 November and 3 December as part of our promise to invest £150 million in the county’s roads.

Highways crews will be working on two sections in Winchcombe Street either side of the A46. This part of the street will be closed to traffic during the day, between 7am and 7pm so essential road maintenance can be carried out. People using Winchcombe Street to get to Albion Street will not be affected.

Diversion routes will be signposted for traffic using this street as a way of reaching the A46. Coming from Prestbury traffic should divert at the junction with the B4075 Priors Road. Those using the A435 from Pittville wishing to get to the A46 should go towards Prestbury and pick up the diversion there.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council, said, “Investing in our county’s roads is one of our priorities, and we hope residents across the county are starting to see a difference as they drive around our network. Winchcombe Street is part of the Cheltenham one-way system and we know this work will cause some people delays, however we will carry out the work as quickly as possible avoiding key events in the city such as the Christmas light switch on and before the December races.”

Cllr Colin Hay, local member for All Saints and Oakley, said, “I’m pleased to see Cheltenham’s roads receiving the investment that I’ve long called for.  Winchcombe Street is a key route through town, with hundreds of vehicle movements everyday, and local residents will agree it’s in need of resurfacing. I understand the county council’s highways team are aiming to take less than a week to complete the work, and ask road users to bear with them while they carry out this important work.”

Please be aware that there will be changes to bus services while this work is carried out. Plan your journey by checking www.stagecoachbus.com or www.traveline.info

What’s the diversion route (suitable for heavies)?

From Clarence Road, follow the right hand land onto the B4632 Prestbury Road towards the junction with the B4075 Priors Road. At this junction turn right. Any traffic wishing to access the A46 from the Prestbury direction on the B4632 will need to turn left at the junction of the B4075 Priors Road. Proceed along the B4075 onto Hales Road and at the junction with the A435 turn right. Follow the A435 until the junction with St James Street, at this point turn right. Follow the left hand lane of St James Street to join the A46 Albion Street and continue along the A46 Fairview Road to the point of both sections of the Winchcombe Street closure.
