Kier Construction named as main contractor for new school

Gloucestershire County Council has announced Kier Construction as the main contractor for the new £30million school in Leckhampton, which will help meet growing demand for schools spaces in the area.
The county council is committed to delivering high quality school places for all children in the county. With Kier Construction in place the council will now be able to move ahead with the process of designing and planning the new secondary school, which is due to open in September 2021.
A formal planning application will be submitted in Summer 2019 and Kier Construction will work with Balcarras Academy Trust, the sponsor for the school to develop the detailed design of the new school facilities and external landscaping.
Cllr Lynden Stowe, cabinet member for economy, skills and growth, said: “This is a major step forward in delivering a brand new high quality secondary school for Cheltenham and ensuring much needed school places are created. This will be a key step in continuing to guarantee excellent schooling in this county – and a crucial part of our £100m investment into schools.”
Ben Ramsay, Operations Director, Kier Construction said “We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred contractor on the new secondary school project in Cheltenham. This achievement through the Southern Contractors Framework builds on our existing relationship working on the Gloucestershire County Council Framework where we have successfully completed over 50 projects in the past 15 years.

Iain Dobie, County Councillor representing Leckhampton and Warden Hill, added ““As a governor for both of the local primary schools, I have long been aware of the need for a new secondary in South Cheltenham to serve the local community and it is great that we have now made another further significant step forward to provide this.”
Initially, the new school will open to new Year 7 students – and the school is expected to grow year by year as the new intake of children enrol.
