With average customer savings of £224, can you afford not to make the Big Community Switch?

The latest Big Community Switch auction can help households save money on bills, including those with pre-payment meters.

Supported by Gloucestershire County Council, the scheme could help you to save money on your gas and electricity bills and is available to residents on dual and single tariffs and those with pre-payment meters.

Meters have a top-up card to pay for fuel and enable people to keep a closer eye on how much they spend on bills. However, those using pre-payment meters are often more at risk of fuel poverty. Following an 18-month investigation into the energy market, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that pre-payment customers are paying more than those on standard variable tariffs. In March this year, they proposed a price cap for all households using pre-payment meters.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, leader of Gloucestershire County Council, said, "This scheme is in its fourth year now, and continues to help more and more people save money on their energy bills. I am pleased the Big Community Switch scheme can help households including those with pre-payment meters save money, using a clear and simple switching process."

The Big Community Switch works by bulk buying fuel. If a large number of people want to change supplier together they are likely to get a better deal than just one person shopping around and switching on their own. In October last year, the council saw the highest number of households to-date take part in the scheme, resulting in an average household saving of £224.

The next round of the Big Community Switch opened on 5th April. You can register online at or by phoning the council on 01452 42 57 57 between 8.30am and 5pm from Monday to Friday. You can also find out more information at your local library.

By registering your interest you are under no obligation to switch supplier. Residents need to register their interest with the Big Community Switch by 16th May at the latest.
