Positive staff feedback leads to industry recognition

A service provided by Gloucestershire County Council to help people live independently in their community has been awarded the Investors in People Standard for a twelfth successive year.

GIS Healthcare provide a county wide Integrated Community Equipment Service which delivers, collects, refurbishes and services a wide range of medical equipment such as beds, and hoists.

The organisation has sites in Hempsted in Gloucester and Mitcheldean in the Forest of Dean.

As more than half of their staff have a disability, GIS offer training and development opportunities to their staff. This helps them to develop personally and professionally which improves long term prospects, promoting independent living.

Now the service has been awarded the Investors in People (IIP) award in recognition for the work they do.

The IIP is the UK’s leading accreditation for business improvement through people management. It also offers resources for businesses to innovate and improve.

GIS have had IIP accreditation since 1996, being successfully reaccredited each year since. This year they have even improved on that status.

They were scored at an advanced level for staff motivation. This shows that they understood what was required of them, a sense of purpose and were supported to do a good job.

This means that the service has achieved Silver Award and met Gold Award standard in four of the nine criteria. Below are some examples of the excellent and positive feedback from staff:

  • “I am motivated to complete my job on time because the service users need the equipment today and not next week”
  • “What I like about working for this company is we are all treated as people and not disabled people”
  • “They have given me the opportunity to learn new skills which I don’t think I would have gained from another company”

Cllr Kathy Williams, cabinet member for Adult Social Care Delivery, said: “Once again, the fantastic work of GIS Healthcare has been recognised with the Investors in People Standard.

“It shows the ongoing commitment and dedication of the hard working and talented staff who work to improve the lives of local people who suffer from disabilities. Well done everyone!”

Nicola Fellows, supported employment development manager at GIS Healthcare, said: “We are extremely proud to have been presented with the award.

“Development and progression of our employees is at the heart of our business and we continuously strive to challenge our employees to progress to their full potential within GIS Healthcare and support them moving into unsupported employment.”
