Footbridge closures in Tewkesbury
Gloucestershire County Council has today closed two footway bridges over the Swilgate River connecting Priors Park and Tewkesbury.
The Swilgate footbridge (pictured) is located over the river between Perry Hill and Howells Road and the Legion footbridge located between Lanescourt and Howells Road, also over the Swilgate River.
Both bridges were in poor condition and have been subject to ongoing monitoring. They were both set to have repair work but post-flooding the bridges were found to have deteriorated more quickly than expected. To ensure the public’s safety both bridges have been closed.
Cllr Kevin Cromwell, local councillor for Gloucestershire County Council said “It’s good that we’ve been able to take quick action here to protect the public’s safety. We apologise for the inconvenience and we will look to get the bridges fully operational again as quickly as possible. I will be pushing for this to happen.”
The repairs for the Swilgate footbridge (from Perry Hill to Howells Road) are being re-designed and will be carried out as soon as possible. Remedial work on Legion footbridge (Lanescourt to Howells Road) is a little more substantial and the design of this will be looked at this financial year.
The diversion route for pedestrians will be to use Link Road Bridge and onto Howells Road.
