Gloucestershire County Council has today announced the location of a new primary school to be built in Bishop’s Cleeve.

The new £11 million carbon neutral primary school will be built to the north of the village on land next to the Old Farmers Arms on Evesham Road.

The school will initially open to 60 Reception children (two forms of entry) in 2023/24, and will gradually be expanded in line with housing growth to three forms of entry from 2030, eventually teaching 630 local children.

The new purpose-built school will be designed and constructed to be carbon neutral, in line with the council’s commitment to be a carbon neutral county by 2045.

Cllr Patrick Molyneux, cabinet member for economy, education and skills, said: “We’re delighted to announce the location of the new primary school today. This is a major step forward in delivering new school places for Bishop’s Cleeve and represents a big part of our £100 million investment into schools, and into the future of children in our county.

Cllr Rob Bird, county councillor for Bishop’s Cleeve, said: ““This excellent outcome is the direct result of sticking to the criteria we set for the most appropriate location for a new school, and a vindication of the county council decision early in 2020 to pause and commission a new land search, following the initial options appraisal.

“We all understood that the ideal location for a new primary school would be on the north side of Bishop’s Cleeve, next to the new housing developments, but the strict requirements for a school site ruled out all the initial options there. This new site only became a reality thanks to the perseverance of the county council, and this exciting new carbon-neutral school represents a major additional investment in the community of Bishop’s Cleeve.”

The local community will be invited to view and feedback on the designs for the school before they are submitted for planning permission later in 2021.

The competition process to identify an academy sponsor to run the new school also started on Monday 1 February. Academy trusts approved by the Department for Education must express an interest by Friday 12 February 2021 and submit and application by Friday 26 March 2021. More information can be found here.
