Crews get ready to start new £1m bus priority lane

Next month Gloucestershire County Council is starting to remove trees and cut back vegetation in preparation for the new A40 Arle Court bus priority scheme.

When plans were put together for the Elmbridge Court roundabout improvements in 2013, a new bus lane along Whittington Road junction heading westbound on the A40 was also agreed.

In February crews will start to remove vegetation along the stretch of road, in order to not disrupt bird nesting season. However, work on the construction of the 350 meter bus lane isn’t planned to start until April this year and should last around 16 weeks.

The new bus priority lane will involve widening the A40 Westbound carriageway, building new traffic islands and signals at Whittngton Road junction, upgrading street lights and putting enforcement cameras for the bus lane on the Whittington Road junction.

As part of the resurfacing that will be involved in the scheme, the cycle ways will be upgraded and improvements will be made to the drainage along the A40 Eastbound verge.

Once finished, the newly dedicated lane will improve journey time for up to two million passengers who use the 94 bus each year, a journey time that has doubled in the last 15 years.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council said; “Firstly I would like to clarify that this scheme does not use any of the road previously associated with the A40 Benhall bus lane. This scheme was abandoned by the county council in 2016 and is not part of the county’s future highway works programme.

“This new bus lane on the A40 approach to Arle Court is a vital piece of infrastructure on one of the most significant public transport routes in Gloucestershire. We’re committed to keeping Gloucestershire moving and schemes such as this play a significant role in achieving that.”
