As the cost-of-living crisis prompts more people to consider buying second-hand large domestic appliances, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) is urging householders to register all appliances, whether brand new or pre-loved.

GFRS is supporting the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliance’s (AMDEA) campaign this week, which runs from 23 to 27 January.

It aims to remind users to register their appliances with the manufacturer, be they small or large, and bought, ‘adopted’ or ‘inherited’.

A recent survey, conducted for AMDEA for Register My Appliance Week showed a significant surge in people thinking about buying a second-hand large domestic appliance, due to the current increasing cost-of-living. Now one in four (25%) of people say they are likely to consider buying a second-hand appliance online, compared to just one in six (16%) four years ago.

The Register My Appliance portal, designed by AMDEA makes it quick and easy to register both new and older appliances. Registration is free and might even extend the life of your appliance, as well as ensuring that the manufacturer will be able to contact you in case of a safety repair or recall.

Mark Preece, Chief Fire Officer for GFRS, said: “Registering your appliances ensures that the manufacturer can quickly establish contact with you if a recall or free safety repair is ever needed. This simple precaution can improve the safety of your home.”

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member with responsibility for the fire and rescue service, said: “With many people now thinking of buying their appliances second hand it is of increasing importance that we all utilise this invaluable tool. I would urge anyone to register their product without delay. You cannot put a price on the peace of mind brought by knowing that you are registered.”
