What do you need to stay happy and independent at home?

The county council is encouraging people to build their circle of support to stay happy, healthy and independent for longer

news

We know that the majority of people in our county want to stay in control of their own lives; they want to be independent and remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

There are lots of practical solutions that can help people worry less and live more. ‘Build Your Circle’ is about inspiring people to live the life they want to live; finding the right support can make a big difference. It could be a gadget to help around the home, financial advice or finding local clubs and groups to keep active and connected to the community.

To help people to build their own circle of support, the county council has created a handy toolkit and directory of services, which is available online or via the council’s Adult Helpdesk.

Cllr Roger Wilson, cabinet member for adult social care, said: “Many people think that care only means one thing - a costly care home or paying for carers to come to their home. There are many things people can do themselves to make their everyday life, or the life of someone close to them, easier; whether that’s with technology to give them peace of mind or connecting them with people and activities in the area.

“This doesn’t mean we will stop being on the other end of the phone for vulnerable people who need our help the most. It’s about giving people options, and opening their eyes to the things they can do for themselves, if that’s what they choose.”

There are many options available in the county that are free or low-cost, which can help people navigate their care needs. Find out more about Build Your Circle at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/buildyourcircle and start building your own circle of support today.

You can also pop into a Drop In Centre located in the Cheltenham, Gloucester, Cirencester, Stroud, Tewkesbury and Forest of Dean libraries to talk to staff about building your circle. They can even help you get online.

Alternatively, call the Adult Helpdesk on 01452 426868 to order a printed copy; or order one by post by writing to: Build Your Circle, The Customer Services Team, Shire Hall Reception, Westgate Street, Gloucester, GL1 2TG.

Members of the team behind Build Your Circle will be visiting various locations around the county throughout spring on the NHS Information Bus. More dates around the county will be confirmed and added soon.
