GFRS appoints new Assistant Chief Fire Officer

Gloucestershire County Council is rounding off its support for International Women’s Day today by announcing the appointment of Jean Cole to the role of Assistant Chief Fire Officer of Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS).

Jean currently works for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) where she is Head of Transformation and Change.

She comes with more than 30 years’ experience of the Fire and Rescue Service, having started her career with West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service in the late 1980s and worked as the business change manager in Government Office for the West Midlands prior to HWFRS.

The candidates were assessed by a mixed staff panel, a stakeholder panel and a formal interview panel.

Jean is due to take up her position on 10 May 2021 and her responsibilities will include business planning and performance and transformation and organisational development.

Wayne Bowcock, Chief Fire Officer, said: “The standard in the assessment process was exceptional and it was an incredibly hard decision. However, Jean’s experience in managing transformation, change and corporate services will bring key expertise to GFRS and the county council and make her the right fit to support us on the next phase of our improvement journey.”

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member with responsibility for the Fire and Rescue Service, said: “There was a very high calibre of candidates but Jean’s experience and ability really stood out. I have no doubt she will prove to be an outstanding Assistant Chief Fire Officer, who will help to continue the great progress being made by the service.”

Jean Cole said: “I’m delighted to be joining Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service at this crucial stage in their journey. I’ve always believed in giving something back to the community and this role will allow me unlimited opportunities to do that. I’m hugely enthusiastic and motivated about the work ahead of us and I’m looking forward to getting started.”
