Official launch of Innovation Lab at Gloucester Library

A new Innovation Lab at Gloucester Library has been officially launched.

Guests were invited to see some of the equipment and services on offer at the launch event on Friday 11 March, including:

  • A demonstration of 3D scanning and printing
  • Virtual Reality headsets
  • Surface Design Studio (a touch screen computer for animation and design)
  • A podcast station to capture soundbites celebrating the day
  • A ‘green screen’ set up for any TikTok users among the guests for images to be used with filming

Gloucestershire County Council leader Cllr Mark Hawthorne cut the ribbon to formally declare the lab open.

The lab at Gloucester Library, funded by local enterprise partnership GFirst LEP, is the second to open in the county, offering the latest digital design equipment and technical expertise available to boost skills and support employment.

The first one opened at Coleford Library in July 2019 and the network is being expanded this spring with funding from Gloucestershire County Council, with more labs opening in Tewkesbury, Stroud, Cheltenham and Chipping Campden.

The labs work with schools, businesses and the community, offering free support with digital skill development. Equipment available includes virtual reality headsets, 3D modelling and printing, as well as a digital design studio, with experienced lab technicians on hand to advise, train and inspire.

Several community events are being planned for children, including a code club which will be launching shortly. Keep an eye on the library and lab social media for information on free community events that will be appropriate for younger audiences.

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member for libraries, said: “I’m delighted to see the Innovation Lab at Gloucester Library being officially launched. The labs provide a really important service in offering access to digital technology and skills for people of all ages and abilities.

“They are having a positive impact on our local communities and it’s great news that we will have one in every district in the county.”
