Speaking after the announcement, Cllr Cordwell thanked colleagues for the opportunity.

He said: "I've been a member of this committee for a long time, and have a lot of experience in the area.

"I'm grateful to my colleagues for electing me as chairman, and hope to be able to carry on the good work of Cllr Moor."

Cllr Nigel Moor, who steps down as chairman, said: "I've enjoyed my time chairing the committee.

"Following my appointment to the county council's cabinet, we needed to find a replacement chairman for the committee and Cllr Cordwell was the outstanding candidate for the role."
