It's not Over at Over

Published
24.05.2018

The county council is moving forward on the £2.756m improvement work at Over roundabout in Gloucester.

The essential work to Over roundabout in Gloucester started in April and is already making good progress.

So the scheme can move forward, two approaches to the roundabout will be closed weeknights as of 29th May.

Commuters travelling Southbound from Maisemore to the Over roundabout will not be able to use the A417 weeknights between 7pm and 6am from Tuesday 29th May until 13th June 2018.

The A40 Westbound between Longford Roundabout and the roundabout will also be fully closed to traffic on weeknights between 7pm and 6am from Tuesday 29th May until 15th June 2018.

So the crews can work safely and quickly, both stretches of road have to be fully closed. Diversions will be signed on all approaches and are also available online: https://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/A40-Over

The scheme has been organised so that no road closures will be in place during peak hours.

The project includes widening the Westbound and Southbound approaches; adding a third lane within the roundabout; building new retaining walls and putting in upgraded LED lighting.

The changes to Over will increase the capacity of the roundabout, relieve congestion and save commuters time. Once completed, it will reduce delays on the A40 east-west and the A417 north-south approaches.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways at Gloucestershire County Council said: “This scheme will make a great difference to commuter’s journey, it will take us a while to complete and I’d like to thank people for their patience whilst we carry out these improvements. The benefits will be worth it.”

Cllr Phillip Awford, county councillor for the Highnam division, said: “Whilst we know these diversions are inconvenient, I ask that you please bear with us because once it has finished this scheme will have a huge benefit on the surrounding communities.”

Cllr Pamela Tracey, county councillor for Hempsted and Westgate, said: “I appreciate and understand that these temporary road closures will cause some disruption but as this is such a vital route for residents of Gloucestershire I ask that you bear with us whilst we make these improvements.”

Road Closures:

A40 Westbound (between Longford Roundabout and Over roundabout) will be closed overnight from 29th May to 15th June between 7pm – 6am.

A417 Southbound (approach to Over from Maisemore) will be closed overnight from 29th May to 13th June between 7pm – 6am.

Resurfacing of the roundabout will take place over two weekends in August (4th – 5th and 11th – 12th August). Road closures will be in place from 7pm Friday evening through to 6am Monday morning. Please note that further restrictions will be in place during the resurfacing of the roundabout but access will be maintained where possible.
