Improvements on the way to Matson Lane

More than 6000 square metres of road surface will be re-laid along Gloucester's Matson Lane next week.

To keep everyone safe while the large machinery is on site, the road will need to close to traffic between 7.30am and 5.30pm from Monday 21st to Monday 28th November.

The road will be open each evening and overnight, and on the weekend.  Access will be maintained for pedestrians at all times.

The work is being done in two phases using the 're-tread' process, a quick and environmentally friendly way to reconstruct roads which has been used across the UK for the last 50 years.

The re-treading will see the road being recycled and re-laid. The process involves cutting out the existing road surface, re-laying it with an infusion of new bitumen and then compacting it - all in-situ.

The surface will then be sealed and coated with surface dressing before being reopened to traffic.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said, "Our work on Matson Lane is part of our ongoing commitment to improve Gloucestershire's roads. The re-tread process we're using is very environmentally friendly and has the lowest carbon emissions of any road construction process currently used in the UK."

Cllr Stephen McHale, local county councillor for Coney Hill and Matson said, "I welcome the new road surface we'll soon have along Matson Lane and I'd like to thank local people and commuters for their patience while they use the diversion routes we'll have in place."

During the work access to the Hallmark Hotel and Health Club, the Gloucestershire Ski and Snowboard Centre and the Gloucester Golf Club will be affected so alternative routes will be clearly signed.

Access will be as follows;

  • Hallmark Hotel - access via Painswick Road, Corncroft Lane, Winnycroft Lane and Matson Lane from 21st to 24th November. Then via Matson Lane as normal on 25th and 28th November.
  • Gloucestershire Ski Centre - as Hallmark Hotel except on Thursday 24th November when there will be no access for vehicles during the road closure period and customers are asked to use the Hallmark Hotel car park.
  • Gloucester Golf Club - access via Painswick Road, Corncroft Lane, Winnycroft Lane and Matson Lane throughout the work.

Once complete there may be some surplus chippings on site while everything beds in. A sweeper will come to remove these within a couple of weeks.

At this point, in mid-December, the re-tread surface will have settled so the road will then be conventionally surfaced - this will enhance the life of the road.

During this time the same diversion routes will be in place for the ski centre and the hotel.

The county council's highway crews work around the clock every day of the year to keep Gloucestershire safe and moving. Anyone on Twitter can follow @GlosRoads to find out what is being worked on at the moment and look out for the hashtag #highways365 for the latest updates.
