What are those purple ribbons?
Some of the keen eyed amongst you may have seen purple ribbons popping up around the county. But what are they?
That’s the question residents were asking this weekend as images of purple ribbons flooded social media.
Gloucestershire County Council’s Adoption team can reveal the answer behind the mystery.
The purple ribbons form part of their campaign to promote National Adoption Week 2017, which starts this Monday 16th October. The campaign is being lead by First 4 Adoption.
National Adoption Week 2017 sees local authorities, adoption agencies, and professionals in adoption working together to highlight the need for children that are looking for their forever families.
The council’s adoption team is asking people to show their support for National Adoption Week 2017 by tying purple ribbons in places around the county. Residents are encouraged to take a picture and share it using the hashtag #supportadoption and tagging @glosadopt on Twitter and Instagram.
The aim of the campaign is raise awareness of adoption and the need for adopters to come forward within Gloucestershire.
There are currently over 15 children in the county needing families to offer them a permanent home. A number of the children are sibling groups, who can be harder to place.
However, the longer the children stay in care the more difficult it can be to place them with families as they get older.
Cllr Richard Boyles, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Adopting is a wonderful way to offer the love and family support to a child or young person.
“Whilst it may seem like a big step we offer full support to all adopters, even after your child is placed and there will always be someone around to help you practically and emotionally.
“Join us to #SupportAdoption for National Adoption Week 2017 and help us to find permanent homes for our county’s children in care.”
